Something I realised that made me love Mike even more is the fact that this scene happens in Mike’s head. He romanticises his girlfriend and the way she reacts to him, which shows us more about who Mike is himself, and how in love he is with her than it does about Tina herself.
When Tina is at the lockers she is supporting him, but it’s tangible. It’s real, because it’s from our perspective. She even reacts with a “You got an Asian F?!” which is in contrast with the softness and romanticism that Mike sees Tina in.
It’s actually his perception of Tina’s belief and love in him that gave him the strength to go to the audition after all.
Mike is an utter romantic, and he loves Tina so much that her perception of him drives and motivates him beyond his own motivation. Just look at the love etched into his face as he imagines hugging Tina in the last frame, feeling understood and accepted, supported and loved.
